Preventing Theft of your Boat or Personal Water Craft
To defend against theft of your boat, motor and equipment:
- Store your boat so that it is not easily accessed.
- Store your boat and trailer in a locked garage or storage area.
- Park another vehicle in front of the trailer or chain and lock the trailer to a fixed object in a well lighted area.
- Secure the boat and trailer to a secure object with a good quality chain and lock. If moored, secure the boat to the dock with a steel cable and lock.
- Use a good quality wheel clamp and remove a trailer wheel if parked for an extended time.
- Purchase a good quality trailer hitch lock and use it.
- Chain and lock the motor and fuel tanks to the boat.
- Mark all equipment with a unique identifier – the Boat Register SelectaDNA is ideal for this.
- If you have a larger or more valuable boat, consider fitting a tracking device – Boat Register’s Mtrack is self powered and waterproof.
- Photograph the interior and exterior of your boat showing all installed equipment and additional gear and equipment – upload these photos into your Boat Register account.
- Title and register your boat – register it with Boat Register to ensure you can provide the vessel and equipment belong to you.
- Make a complete inventory of your equipment, boat and trailer.
- Record the serial numbers of engines, equipment and electronics.
- Keep all purchase receipts, invoices, surveys and other paperwork
- Remove expensive electronics or other valuables if the boat is left unattended.
- Cover your boat and always remove the keys.
